about

These days mules aren't used for plowing, anymore, but prior to the 1940s, when tractors began to come within the reach of farmers a lot of the corn and cotton fields were plowed with mules. They were strong, and hard workers. It was a big day, for a boy, when he was regarded as old enough to learn to plow, part of becoming a man. This song gives some of the advice that countless boys heard from their fathers and uncles and grandfathers, about plowing.
The term 'Jarhead' was applied to mules before it came into common use to describe U.S. Marines. It was most often used in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Missouri, a bit of regional dialect. Bottom land, of course is the richest farm land to be found, former river bottom soil that is extremely fertile, often low lying land along a river.

Plowin' Bottom Land

Oil that harness, keep it clean and polish up your plow
Oil that harness, keep it clean and polish up your plow
Snap those lines and off you go, you're set for plowing now

There ain't nothing quite like a jarhead mule, he's a four legged long eared working fool
There ain't nothing quite like a jarhead mule, he's a four legged long eared working fool
One step two step three step four, that's the way the old mule goes

If you plow that bottom land
If you plow that bottom land
It will test your eye and hand if you plow that bottom land

Set your eye on a distant point and don't you turn aside
Set your eye on a distant point and don't you turn aside
Rocks and roots get in your way just take them in your stride

You want to keep those furrows straight and neat
You want to keep those furrows straight and neat
Bust those clods up with your feet you want to keep those furrows straight and neat

Let your mule take a little rest he's working hard as you
Let your mule take a little rest he's working hard as you
Won't hurt you to stop a spell and catch a breather too

Let your mule take a little rest he's working hard as you
